Fifteen Transition Years enjoyed attending the launch of the St Vincent De Paul’s schools’ programme at Knock Shrine on 14th September, which was hosted by the Western Region St Vincent De Paul (SVP).

The girls had presentations on social justice issues followed by round table discussions. Speakers on the day included Fr Peter Mc Verry SJ, Joanne O’Riordan, John Lonergan and Dr Cara Augestenborg.

The girls reported that they were delighted to be in the presence of such inspirational figures such as Fr. Peter Mc Verry who founded the Peter Mc Verry Trust, helping homeless nationwide.

The girls and said how much they appreciated the work he described and he helped them look past the title ‘The homeless’ to see these people as real people.

Along with Fr. Peter Mc Verry we heard Cara Augestenborg talk about the environment and John Lonergan give an inspirational talk.

All the girls adored the final guest speaker, the remarkable Joanne O’ Riordan. Born with no limbs, Joanne has become unbelievably successful and is the positive influence we need in society today. The girls agreed she is an admirable role model, whom they were all privileged to meet.
